CONSERVATION PROGRAM
OF THE JAGUARETE IN THE CHACO

The Jaguar Conservation Program in the Chaco is one of the components of the Society for the Preservation of Endangered Carnivores and their International Ecological Study (SPECIES), which is committed to the development and implementation of holistic, inclusive and high-impact projects in the service of promoting the conservation of the world's carnivores.

A LITTLE HISTORY.

In 2005, the director and founder of SPECIES, Anthony Giordano, arrived in Paraguay and made a general survey of the conservation status of carnivores and their prey. After conducting a preliminary study of the conservation status of jaguars in the Gran Chaco Americano, he saw the need to invest even more efforts in this region, giving birth to the Chaco Jaguar Conservation Project in 2008. Ten years later, and after hiring a local coordinator promoted the expansion of the project to the current Jaguar Conservation Program in Chaco (PCJC), covering greater challenges and commitments to the conservation of this species.

The PCJC has its beginnings in the first evaluations and scientific investigations of the jaguar in the Paraguayan Chaco, recognizing it as a flagship species for the conservation of the habitats where it is found and the wildlife that inhabit them.

NOWADAYS.

This program is an ecoregional effort that seeks to make jaguars the face of environmental conservation efforts and more broadly oriented to protect Chaco forest and savannah habitats, protect diverse ecological communities, and preserve the ecological functioning and integrity of entire ecosystems. , starting with the highest trophic levels.

To fulfill this civic and environmental commitment, we work together with Chaco producers to mitigate the human-jaguar conflict, and develop good livestock practices on their farms. Likewise, we focus on supporting local education on environmental issues and developing the skills of university students and civil society.

Within the framework of good livestock practices and sustainable production, the implementation of livestock techniques aimed at harmonious coexistence between livestock production and wildlife conservation is sought. Our experience adds to the veterinary professionals, agronomists and others of this activity, in the task of strengthening the coexistence between the large carnivores and the livestock production sector of our country.

OUR MISSION.

To ensure the viability, diversity, and integrity of the world's threatened, endangered, and declining native carnivore populations and communities and their prey; mitigate threats to their future survival; and restore their part in the healthy functioning and integrity of the planet's ecosystems. SPECIES is committed to the development and implementation of holistic, inclusive and impactful projects to promote the conservation of the world's carnivores.

Our goals and objectives are achieved through the integration of various components and elements, including: science and research, education through mentoring and outreach, institutional capacity building, development and empowerment of local communities, incorporating perspectives and contexts. cultures, cultivation of community leadership, technological and socioeconomic innovations, international markets, market research, policy development and long-term strategic planning. We believe that the restoration and conservation of many wildlife habitats and great landscapes begins and ends with their carnivore communities, and we aim to integrate the needs of people and carnivores for a sustainable future.
