OUR
ACHIEVEMENTS
Over the years, thanks to multiple efforts, as a Program we have many achievements!
Scientific advances
Completion of the first scientific investigation of jaguars in the Paraguayan Chaco and one of the largest geographically scientific studies of jaguars in the Gran Chaco biome, including:
1- Estimation of the population size of jaguars for Paraguay.
2- A complete document of known jaguar records throughout Paraguay from the last 20 years, as well as a probabilistic map of jaguar occurrence and reproduction.
3- The first successful demonstration of non-invasive genetic sampling as an effective methodology for monitoring jaguars in the Gran Chaco, particularly where and when the use of camera capture or other techniques is not cost-effective or logistically feasible.
4-The first genetic evaluation of jaguar population connectivity between jaguars from the Paraguayan Chaco and those from the Brazilian Pantanal.
Training for the student sector
Orientation to Paraguayan graduate students, influential in issues of ecological management, protected areas and climate change in Paraguay.
Volunteering
Having provided opportunities to experience field work through the volunteer program for dozens of students of the University's biology major at the University of Asunción; many of whom visited the Chaco for the first time in their lives by participating in our research and conservation programs.
Workshops for livestock operators
Having hosted workshops on education and mitigation of conflicts between predators and humans, aimed at rural actors in the Paraguayan Chaco, particularly commercial operators of production and sale of cattle. These workshops emphasized simple, cost-effective techniques and methods to mitigate and reduce conflict, additional land uses economically compatible with sustainable ranching, and our services to assist with the development of tailored conservation and conflict mitigation strategies.
Links with interregional organizations
Collaboration in the development and coordination of the first multi-regional Workshop on Chaco Jaguars in Bolivia in 2011, where the PCJC presented the conservation status of the species, the threats they face and their needs in the Paraguayan Chaco.
Local Program Design
Launch of a conflict mitigation and connectivity maintenance program focused on the biological and ecological needs of jaguars, and strategies designed to support the viability of local jaguar populations.
Collaboration with national institutions
Collaboration in the elaboration of the Management Plan for the Panthera Onca in Paraguay (2017-2027).
